 The city of Sault Ste. Marie is located in Chippewa County on the southern shore of Lake Superior. Chippewa County includes one city, one village and 15 townships. Chippewa County has a strong services/government sector employment base and a growing manufacturing base. The County Board of Commissioners is the governing board and policy-making body of County Government. While many of it's powers, duties and responsibilities are prescribed by law and diffused through the wide-spread use of commissioners, boards, committees and independently elected officers, the board is in charge of the development and approval of county policy. Commissioners are elected to a two year term on a partisan basis from single member districts within the county. The Board of Commissioners meets for regular session on the second Monday of each month and at such other times and days as may be established. The city of Sault Ste. Marie is governed by the city commission which hosts 6 commissioners as well as a mayor. All of these are elected positions with commissioners holding office for two years. Three commissioners run for office each year, providing for a balance among the sitting commission.
