Employment
The largest component of the Chippewa County economy is government, including local, county, state, federal and tribal municipalities and agencies. Major employers include the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians, Michigan Department of Corrections, Lake Superior State University, Chippewa County and the city. An increase in border patrol agents and the presence of the U.S. Coast Guard also bring jobs.

Manufacturing is another strong factor. In fact, while the state has been steadily losing manufacturing jobs, the Soo has been gaining, said Jim Hendricks, executive director of the city’s Economic Development Corporation. Manufacturing jobs in the city have grown 45 percent since 1990, representing a total of about 600 jobs. The mix of manufacturers is wide ranging, from startups to long-time firms with products ranging from surgical instruments to wood veneer.

Sault Ste. Marie is also the Upper Peninsula’s number 1 tourist destination, and visitors to area’s historic sites, casinos, locks, parks, lakes and other natural attractions infuse millions into the economy each year.

War Memorial Hospital—a major employer—has also initiated major site improvements and added physicians and jobs, providing a healthy boost. It’s growing as the health sciences industry becomes a growing economic force in the area. Other expansions exemplifying the industries vibrancy are occurring at Tendercare Health Centers, Marquette General Hospital and the number of private healthcare offices opening.
